Plumbing: Most people are familiar with the plumber who comes to their home and installs an appliance or unclogs a drain. In addition to this, plumbers install, maintain, and repair many different types of pipe systems. For example, some systems move water or chemicals through plants, while others give us our drinking water at home. Plumbers also install plumbing fixtures, such as bathtubs, showers, sinks, and toilets, and appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters.
Employment of plumbers is expected to grow significantly due to an increase in residential, industrial, and commercial construction. The increase in installation of sprinkler systems , water and wastewater treatment plants, and other projects that have large pipe systems will ensure the employment of plumbers to maintain these systems.
Average earnings in 2000 were between $14.00 and $24.24 per hour.* Pipe layers, plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters are among the highest paid construction occupations.
